AVATAR

So it looks like I find myself to be disconnected from Pop Culture yet again. With James Cameron's AVATAR blowing up these past few weeks (apparently already #3 All Time Grossing Movies), I can't muster up the desire to see this flick like everyone else in the world seems to have. Granted, Cameron has conjured up something that LOOKS incredible and has the potential to be one of the most visually appealing films in recent memory. However, the story seems a little thin doesn't it? Here are two separate, albeit short, plot summaries:

In the future, Jake, a paraplegic war veteran, is brought to another planet, Pandora, which is inhabited by the Na'vi, a humanoid race with their own language and culture. Those from Earth find themselves at odds with each other and the local culture. Written by Giorgio_C

When his brother is killed in battle, paraplegic Marine Jake Sully decides to take his place in a mission on the distant world of Pandora. There he learns of greedy corporate figurehead Parker Selfridge's intentions of driving off the native humanoid "Na'vi" in order to mine for the precious material scattered throughout their rich woodland. In exchange for the spinal surgery that will fix his legs, Jake gathers intel for the cooperating military unit spearheaded by gung-ho Colonel Quaritch, while simultaneously attempting to infiltrate the Na'vi people with the use of an "avatar" identity. While Jake begins to bond with the native tribe and quickly falls in love with the beautiful alien Neytiri, the restless Colonel moves forward with his ruthless extermination tactics, forcing the soldier to take a stand - and fight back in an epic battle for the fate of Pandora. Pretty thin. I get how he is integrating the potential problems of our world meshed with a nice splash of sci-fi, but come on. Maybe I'm just being a Cynic but I have no desire to see this flick nor do I get what all the hype is about. It looks awesome, yeah, but I'm not interested in seeing it. I can't wait to download it for free.

Lastly, in my opinion the Na'Vi aren't all that original. Take a look below to see what I mean.
