So, This blog isn't gonna die.
We've just hit a slow point.
Just busy I guess.
Chew on this...
I heard that a womens activist group(s) want to eliminate the slogan "HO HO HO" from the holidays as its demeaning to women.

You have gotta be fuckin kidding me. HO HO HO is offensive? Get a fuckin life.

This post was just to reassure Panda we're doin fine.

Ben Gali Project

Hey everyone. I was looking over a few old emails and came across one of a friends band's MySpace page. The band are called Ben Gali Project, and are based in the Greater Toronto Area. They are relatively new band and are working really hard on releasing an EP, and have an upcoming show at "The Swimming Pool" on Friday November 16, 2007. I've personally been to a few shows, and can honestly say they are a band that are consistently taking the steps to find a sound that belongs to them. Go check them out when you can, and help support Canadian and Torontonian music.

BANKSY GRAFFITI ARTIST KING

is probably my favorite artist right now. I really don't know what it is about him that I find so appealing (vigilante artist, simplicity of everything, political message, or the general fuck you message that seems to come across in a lot of his work), but I can't seem to get enough of it. I was looking at the BANKSY web site last night and there were some cool additions to it and wanted to share his work with whomever skims through this blog. Its amazing. Recently I have added to the artwork on my body and decided to keep a little of Banksy with me. Here it is, and some of his other work. Hope you all like it. Oh, and he also has a book called "Wall and Piece" just got it recently, and its fantastic.

My Banksy

Just some of Banksy's work that I like best. Feel free to visit the site listed above.

Tile M for Murder

I got this short story in English class and really liked it. You should all read it, it's funny. It's from a site called East of the Web which has a large collection of short stories. Bookmark it for a rainy day.

Charlie Fish

Death By Scrabble
or
Tile M For Murder

It's a hot day and I hate my wife.

We're playing Scrabble. That's how bad it is. I'm 42 years old, it's a blistering hot Sunday afternoon and all I can think of to do with my life is to play Scrabble.

I should be out, doing exercise, spending money, meeting people. I don't think I've spoken to anyone except my wife since Thursday morning. On Thursday morning I spoke to the milkman.

My letters are crap.

I play, appropriately, BEGIN. With the N on the little pink star. Twenty-two points.

I watch my wife's smug expression as she rearranges her letters. Clack, clack, clack. I hate her. If she wasn't around, I'd be doing something interesting right now. I'd be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. I'd be starring in the latest Hollywood blockbuster. I'd be sailing the Vendee Globe on a 60-foot clipper called the New Horizons - I don't know, but I'd be doing something.

She plays JINXED, with the J on a double-letter score. 30 points. She's beating me already. Maybe I should kill her.

If only I had a D, then I could play MURDER. That would be a sign. That would be permission.

I start chewing on my U. It's a bad habit, I know. All the letters are frayed. I play WARMER for 22 points, mainly so I can keep chewing on my U.

As I'm picking new letters from the bag, I find myself thinking - the letters will tell me what to do. If they spell out KILL, or STAB, or her name, or anything, I'll do it right now. I'll finish her off.

My rack spells MIHZPA. Plus the U in my mouth. Damn.

The heat of the sun is pushing at me through the window. I can hear buzzing insects outside. I hope they're not bees. My cousin Harold swallowed a bee when he was nine, his throat swelled up and he died. I hope that if they are bees, they fly into my wife's throat.

She plays SWEATIER, using all her letters. 24 points plus a 50 point bonus. If it wasn't too hot to move I would strangle her right now.

I am getting sweatier. It needs to rain, to clear the air. As soon as that thought crosses my mind, I find a good word. HUMID on a double-word score, using the D of JINXED. The U makes a little splash of saliva when I put it down. Another 22 points. I hope she has lousy letters.

< 2 >

She tells me she has lousy letters. For some reason, I hate her more.

She plays FAN, with the F on a double-letter, and gets up to fill the kettle and turn on the air conditioning.

It's the hottest day for ten years and my wife is turning on the kettle. This is why I hate my wife. I play ZAPS, with the Z doubled, and she gets a static shock off the air conditioning unit. I find this remarkably satisfying.

She sits back down with a heavy sigh and starts fiddling with her letters again. Clack clack. Clack clack. I feel a terrible rage build up inside me. Some inner poison slowly spreading through my limbs, and when it gets to my fingertips I am going to jump out of my chair, spilling the Scrabble tiles over the floor, and I am going to start hitting her again and again and again.

The rage gets to my fingertips and passes. My heart is beating. I'm sweating. I think my face actually twitches. Then I sigh, deeply, and sit back into my chair. The kettle starts whistling. As the whistle builds it makes me feel hotter.

She plays READY on a double-word for 18 points, then goes to pour herself a cup of tea. No I do not want one.

I steal a blank tile from the letter bag when she's not looking, and throw back a V from my rack. She gives me a suspicious look. She sits back down with her cup of tea, making a cup-ring on the table, as I play an 8-letter word: CHEATING, using the A of READY. 64 points, including the 50-point bonus, which means I'm beating her now.

She asks me if I cheated.

I really, really hate her.

She plays IGNORE on the triple-word for 21 points. The score is 153 to her, 155 to me.

The steam rising from her cup of tea makes me feel hotter. I try to make murderous words with the letters on my rack, but the best I can do is SLEEP.

My wife sleeps all the time. She slept through an argument our next-door neighbours had that resulted in a broken door, a smashed TV and a Teletubby Lala doll with all the stuffing coming out. And then she bitched at me for being moody the next day from lack of sleep.

< 3 >

If only there was some way for me to get rid of her.

I spot a chance to use all my letters. EXPLODES, using the X of JINXED. 72 points. That'll show her.

As I put the last letter down, there is a deafening bang and the air conditioning unit fails.

My heart is racing, but not from the shock of the bang. I don't believe it - but it can't be a coincidence. The letters made it happen. I played the word EXPLODES, and it happened - the air conditioning unit exploded. And before, I played the word CHEATING when I cheated. And ZAP when my wife got the electric shock. The words are coming true. The letters are choosing their future. The whole game is - JINXED.

My wife plays SIGN, with the N on a triple-letter, for 10 points.

I have to test this.

I have to play something and see if it happens. Something unlikely, to prove that the letters are making it happen. My rack is ABQYFWE. That doesn't leave me with a lot of options. I start frantically chewing on the B.

I play FLY, using the L of EXPLODES. I sit back in my chair and close my eyes, waiting for the sensation of rising up from my chair. Waiting to fly.

Stupid. I open my eyes, and there's a fly. An insect, buzzing around above the Scrabble board, surfing the thermals from the tepid cup of tea. That proves nothing. The fly could have been there anyway.

I need to play something unambiguous. Something that cannot be misinterpreted. Something absolute and final. Something terminal. Something murderous.

My wife plays CAUTION, using a blank tile for the N. 18 points.

My rack is AQWEUK, plus the B in my mouth. I am awed by the power of the letters, and frustrated that I cannot wield it. Maybe I should cheat again, and pick out the letters I need to spell SLASH or SLAY.

Then it hits me. The perfect word. A powerful, dangerous, terrible word.

I play QUAKE for 19 points.

I wonder if the strength of the quake will be proportionate to how many points it scored. I can feel the trembling energy of potential in my veins. I am commanding fate. I am manipulating destiny.

My wife plays DEATH for 34 points, just as the room starts to shake.

I gasp with surprise and vindication - and the B that I was chewing on gets lodged in my throat. I try to cough. My face goes red, then blue. My throat swells. I draw blood clawing at my neck. The earthquake builds to a climax.

I fall to the floor. My wife just sits there, watching.

Pianos, Man.

Now that Al has reached his post quota for the month of October, it's once again up to the Lead and I to keep this thing afloat. So expect posts about nothing in particular.

I like the piano. If I knew how to play, I'd play these two songs for everyone I met. I think at least a couple girls would be impressed enough to do me, too. Well, probably not. But I would do me. If I could play these songs, I mean. This is a pretty bad post.

Yann Tiersen - Les Deux Pianos

Aphex Twin - Avril 14th

Anyway, if you know anything else like these two songs let me know.

Radiohead

So, I've waited a day to say something about this album. First off its a lot more mellow than I thought. Thats not a bad thing, it just took me by surprise. The album starts off with a track that gets you right into the album, and in my opinion its the best on the album (open to personal interpretation I guess. However if you don't like the opening track, you suck).

As you progress through the album your hit with tracks that are in an arrangement not reminiscent of past Radiohead albums, however give the feeling of an entire full album. Comparable arrangements can be O.K. Computer, which shares In Rainbows' full sound.

Basically I really think this album is one of their best. Tracks like "15 Step," "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi," "All I Need," "Faust Arp," "House of Cards" and a makeover of "Reckoner" make you wanna listen to this album over and over. I honestly don't know what to expect with the second CD, but if its anything like this it's gonna be a great early Christmas gift.

If you haven't downloaded the new Radiohead album "In Rainbows" do so immediately. It's a must own/download, whatever. Get it.

Now I'll leave it to Panda to write a far better review than this.

Radiohead, In Rainbows 10/10, * * * * *

-Lead-

--------------------------------------------

so i guess it's my turn. i'll do songs:

15 Step - this is probably my favourite jam on the record. it's just the best; from the crunchy clap percussion to the fat baseline to the kids yelling "yaaay". ace.

Bodysnatchers - didn't love this live but they did it right in the studio. love that the amps sound broken or really stressed out or something.

Nude - finally.

Weird Fishes/Arpeggi - my favourite of the live boots and still pretty fuckin' great. wish the drums were bigger though.

All I Need - i don't care if it sounds a little like boards of canada's "roygbiv", this is a huge improvement from the live recordings. it seemed flat live but they managed to record one of their strongest tracks since amnesiac. um, the "it's alright" outro is my favourite thing on the record.

Faust Arp - not really feeling this. it's okay i guess. i was hoping it could be another Treefingers or Hunting Bears. whatever.

Reckoner - i was a little bummed when i realized that they didn't record this the way they played it in 2001, but it's already grown on me a lot. a good decision. thom's croon is his best singing ever... maybe.

House of Cards - i always really liked this song, and i still do. it's so nice.

Jigsaw Falling Into Place - second half is pretty awesome. could have let loose a little more though.

Videotape - phil's drumming. needed a bigger crescendo or climax or something. still pretty sweet.

so, on the whole, it's a mature record that sounds familiar but still new. really pretty, kinda spooky and warm at the same time. strong tunes that vibe well together, but it's not mind-blowing like kid a/mnesiac was. it's still early and i have lots of listening to do but i'm guessing it'll sit between amnesiac and the bends as my fourth favourite radiohead record. i'm sure all of my opinions will change the more i listen so i guess this has been a bit of a useless exercise , but it was still the funnest thing i did all day. anyway, here's to hoping that lp8 will be the dub record of the year in '09.

The Avett Brothers Rocked My Socks

Holy Fuck! If there was one show I am really glad I had the chance to see it was The Avett Brothers at The Horseshoe Tavern. It was phenomenal.
I had a feeling that The Avett Brothers would play well, however, I was equally afraid that their usual enthusiasm would be lost based on the sparsity of the crowd and the crowds ability, or inability, to create the atmosphere I'd assumed they were used to. It was roughly 9:30pm when they took the stage and started out. They walked on the stage and I'm sure they felt a little short changed by the small crowd, but it didn't stop them from kicking the shit out of every song they played. With songs from their new album "Paranoia in Bb Major," "Die, Die, Die," their old albums, "November Blue," "Distraction #54," "Talk on Indolence" and wicked version of "Pretty Girl From Chile" to end their first set.
They came back for two encores of 1 - 2 songs each. These class acts then jumped off the stage and actually went from person to person in the crowd thanking them for coming to the show. Class Acts these guys. They took the time to thank as many people as they could (I'm pretty sure it was everyone there), taking pictures, signing autographs, and just hanging out.
The next time these guys roll into town I highly recommend you take the time to go see this trio because they are fuckin awesome. They put 100% and then some into the show and make it a night to remember.

A+, 5 stars, 10+/10

Thanks for readin y'all

P.S. Be hesitant to bring your girlfriend to the show the next time they come around though. I brought my girlfriend and incidentally nearly lost her to The Avett Brothers and their Southern good looks, manners, and unparalleled musicianship. Hahahaha bye byes

More Childs

Now I knew this would happen so here is the second post of Childs Revealed, "More Childs." This post is due mainly to the difference in opinion of us childs, and our likness in certain pictures. So now, underneath each picture is who it is and who drew it. We all drew each other and ourselves so we should have no problem anymore. Somehow I doubt it.

Animal Collective Live on Conan, Tonight

Update:

So, here it is. The played #1. Surprised me again, which isn't too surprising. Watch it!

_________________________

So pals, my favouritest band is making their television debut tonight on Conan. They're probably going to play Peacebone but it almost doesn't matter to me. I'm just happy that they've started to gain some of the recognition I feel they've deserved for a long time. Anyway, if you find yourself awake at 1:20am tonight be sure to tune in. Other guests include Jennifer Connelly!

In unrelated band news, the guys are also not appearing on South Park. If they were, they'd look something like this:

Deakin:

Geologist:

Panda Bear:

Avey Tare:

Bonefish.

BRMC Deliver Mediocrity at the Warehouse

Last night I went to the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club show at the Warehouse or Kool Haus. Whatever you wanna call it, I'm just used calling it The Warehouse.
Anyway, the venue, for those who've been there, was the usual shit. Empty at first and slowly filled up, which was surprising to me because I never thought they would draw a crowd that large.
They came to the stage at about 10:30pm after two of the worst opening acts I have ever seen. They were awful.
They came out and did their thing and did it pretty well. Only familiar with one of the four album releases they have I still seemed to enjoy myself. As I waited to hear songs off of the album "Howl" I quickly became bored with many of songs as they seemed to drag on like an old man telling you a useless story.
But unlike an old man, they would grab my attention back by playin some wicked tunes like: Aint no easy way, White Palms (kicked ass), and a wicked Bob Dylan cover
(The Lonesome Death Of Hattie Carroll) on the acoustic guitar. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club can kick the shit outta music and get everyone goin when they want to, but it wasn't consistent effort from the entire band last night.
So, with the band
goin back and forth from kickin ass on stage to making me question why I went to the show, I can only say the show was decent, and it'll take a pretty good album or some wicked live bootlegs to get me back to another show. Maybe I sound a little cynical because I haven't familiarized myself with their music, but that really shouldn't be an excuse.

Who Killed Laura Palmer?

Partially because Alex has been neglecting his blogging duties and partially because I have absolutely nothing to do, I'm going to take this opportunity to try and encourage whoever reads this blog to watch Twin Peaks. Season one, which I finished a few days ago, was the best season of television I've ever seen. Not surprisingly, David Lynch acted as creator, writer, and director for most of the episodes. You can find the pilot episode streaming online in 14 parts, starting here, and you can watch the next seven episodes of season one here. Or, you can scroll through this dude's amazing profile and watch the entire series on YouTube in a billion parts. The show also had the best and most creepy theme song ever. So check it out, eh.

As for my jerkstick partner, Al's been working on some sweet jams that he's going to be posting up in the near future. Right Al? Yeah. They're going to be so awesome, with lots of vocals, reverb, and hand-claps. Okay, back to Thunder Bay.

Heard this guy on the radio this week, he's awesome, and if it wasn't for one of my pals i could have seen him this weekend in Quebec (god dammit!). Anyways, listen to the song Close to Paradise and if you like it i recommend you download the album.
